Roy’s Biography

Roy Stevens (1916–1988)

Roy Stevens’ story is one of resilience, passion, and devotion to music. Born in 1916, Roy lost his father at a young age. Growing up during the hardships of the Great Depression, he turned to his trumpet not only as a source of joy but also as a way to help support his family. By his teenage years, he was already playing professionally, a path that would shape the rest of his life.
Roy’s talent quickly carried him into the heart of the swing era. He performed with many of the era’s greatest bands, including those of Tommy Dorsey, Bunny Berigan, and Benny Goodman. Later, he led his own big band, recording for London Records. In 1950, his band earned the DownBeat Band of the Year Award, a remarkable achievement that solidified his reputation. Managed by Joe Glaser—the legendary manager of Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Hot Lips Page, and Henry “Red” Allen—Roy stood shoulder-to-shoulder with jazz’s finest. He also played with the Raymond Scott Orchestra and shared the stage with Coleman Hawkins at the famed Kelly’s Stable on 52nd Street.
Beyond performance, Roy carried a deep commitment to teaching and passing on his knowledge. He studied with the renowned William Costello, a trumpet teacher and Metronome magazine columnist. When Costello retired, Roy took over his studio and continued developing what became known as the Stevens–Costello System, a method of trumpet embouchure training that shaped countless musicians.
Even as he taught, Roy never gave up performing, keeping his trumpet alive in both small combos and big bands. He also brought his expertise into academia as an Associate Instructor at Columbia University’s Teachers College.
Roy Stevens dedicated his life to the trumpet—as a performer, bandleader, and teacher. His influence lives on in the musicians he mentored, the bands he inspired, and the joy he brought to audiences. He continued teaching and playing until his passing in October 1988, leaving behind a legacy rooted in music, perseverance, and love for his craft.
